Message from the Chairman

Thank you for visiting our I-CEEC Web page.

The graduate program of the International Civil and Environmental Engineering Course (I-CEEC) was established in 2019 in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University. I-CEEC is aiming at cultivating enthusiastic global-minded international students who aspire to play key international leadership roles in the future.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering takes up academic fields that create the civil infrastructures for abundant and culturally rich social living environment. The scope encompassed by civil and environmental engineering is broad and diverse. Included are the design/construction/maintenance of public social infrastructure such as roads, bridges, railways, maritime ports, airports, and water and sewage systems; the creation of waterside spaces coexisting with nature; the construction of regions and cities that are resilient to disasters such as floods, earthquakes and tsunamis; and the planning of beautiful, livable, efficient and economical urban spaces. The department provides the world-top class research-oriented education by more than 30 of experienced faculty members and carries out daily research contributing to the advance of society to meet diversifying and emerging needs.

I-CEEC is one of the Future Global Leadership (FGL) Program at Tohoku University, which offers outstanding graduate degree courses taught in English. The program recruits students from around the world who share an international perspective, desire to be active on a global scale, and have excellent fundamental academic abilities. Students can enroll in master's or doctoral degree course in I-CEEC. As the master's degree program directly connects to the doctoral degree program, students have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research throughout both graduate programs.

It should be noted that, in order to contribute the education of international leading civil engineers in the area of disaster risk management through I-CEEC, the department works together with the JICA's "Long-term Training Program for Disaster Risk Reduction (DDR) to Implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030," which was adopted at the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015 in Sendai, Japan, on March 18, 2015.

Tohoku University's traditional spirits are "Research First," "Open Doors," and "Practice-Oriented Research and Education." While respecting this spirit, our department is doing its utmost to achieve its educational goals, and as part of this, we are offering I-CEEC, a wonderful opportunity for research and education for everyone. We look forward to receiving your applications.
